Personal Printer Data Stream

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Personal Printer Data Stream ( PPDS ; German personal print data stream ) is a proprietary page description language for IBM printers. PPDS combines both content and printer control commands in a bidirectional communication protocol . PPDS has been available in different, downwardly compatible versions ("levels") since its market launch in 1981.

Today (as of 2010), PPDS has been replaced by the more modern IPDS and PCL protocols . It is still used occasionally in existing applications (“legacy applications”).

With the exception of some Epson models, current printers no longer support this protocol. PPDS is also supported with current Lexmark printers .
