People, institutions, objects, things
People, institutions, objects, things (PIOS) is a database that was set up in the 1970s by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) to fight terrorism .
Under Horst Herold , President of the BKA since 1971, the Federal Criminal Police Office in Wiesbaden was extensively equipped with computers for search purposes. The new type of dragnet was used in particular to combat the Red Army Faction (RAF) around Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof . One tool of the raster search was the database (“file” in the linguistic usage at the time) “persons, institutions, objects, things”, or “PIOS” for short.
"People, institutions, objects, things" was also the name of an exhibition by the design studio and creative collective "Studio KQ" in the Kunsthalle Tübingen in 2017 , which dealt artistically and ironically with the grid search.
