Peter Constantine

Peter Constantine (* 1963 in London ) is a translator and author. His translations include literary works from German, Russian, French, ancient and modern Greek, from Italian, Albanian, Dutch and Slovenian.

His mother was from Austria while his father was a British man of Turkish-Greek descent. Constantine first grew up in Athens before moving to the USA. His first book, Japanese Street Slang , was published in 1992 by the Random House publishing group .

In the early 1990s he began translating short stories and poetry from various European languages. These translations have been published in literary journals from the United States as well as from Great Britain and Australia. His first novel-length translation was Six Early Stories by Thomas Mann . Excerpts from it were published in the New York Times .

Since then he has worked almost exclusively as a literary translator. He translated u. a. Hannah Arendt , Bernhard Schlink , Anton Chekhov , Nikolai Gogol , Lev Tolstoy , Voltaire and Machiavelli .

Awards

  • 1998 PEN / Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize for the translation of Six Early Stories by Thomas Mann ; the book was on the New York Times as a Notable Book of the Year chosen.
  • 1999 National Translation Award for Thirty-Eight New Stories
  • 2002 Koret Jewish Book Award and National Jewish Book Award for the translation of the complete works of Isaac Babel (edited by Nathalie Babel)
  • 2004/2005 Literature Prize of the Greek Association of Translators for his translation of the volume of poetry Mother by the Greek poet Stylianos Harkianakis
  • 2007 Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator Award for the translation of Benjamin Lebert's novel Der Vogel ist ein Rabe .
  • 2008 finalist for the PEN / Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize for his translation of the fundamental writings of Machiavelli
  • 2012 Ellen Maria Gorrissen Berlin Prize of the American Academy in Berlin 2012 of the American Academy in Berlin.
