Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize ( English Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize ) is a prize for literary translations from German into English, which was first awarded in 1996. The prize, financed by the German government and endowed with 10,000 euros, was awarded by the Goethe Institute in Chicago until 2014 and has since been awarded annually in June by the Goethe Institute in New York City . The award goes to outstanding translations published in the USA in the previous year. In addition to the prize money, the winner will be given a two-month stay at the Literary Colloquium Berlin .

The award honors the memory of Kurt Wolff , who, supported by his wife Helen, was one of Germany's most important publishers in the 1920s. Forced to emigrate by the National Socialists in 1941 , he founded the Pantheon Books publishing house in New York , whose program focused on translations from German and European literature.
