Isabel Fargo Cole

Isabel Fargo Cole (* 1973 in Galena , Illinois ) is an American writer and translator. She lives in Germany and writes in German.

Life

Isabel Fargo Cole grew up in New York City and studied literature, history and philosophy at the University of Chicago . In 1995 she moved to Berlin and studied Russian and modern German literature at the Humboldt University .

Cole works as a freelance translator. She has translated books by various German-speaking authors, including Franz Fühmann , Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Wolfgang Hilbig , into English. She lives in Berlin. She has also been working as an author since 2005, writing her texts in German.

In 2013 she published her novella: Unsecured Terrain , which puts questions of personal integrity to the test in times of spying. Together with Juli Zeh and Ilija Trojanow she founded “Writers Against Mass Surveillance”, a citizens' initiative of writers against the dangers of public mass surveillance. In 2017 Edition Nautilus published her novel The Green Border about a family of artists who moved to Sorge in the GDR border area in the Harz Mountains in the 1970s . Spiegel-online called the book: "A book on Germany that does without any clichés and, despite its almost 500 pages, never seems bloated."

Her second novel, Das Poison der Biene , was also published by Edition Nautilus in September 2019. Isabel Fargo Cole describes the story of a young American woman who lived in an occupied house in the east of Berlin in the early 1990s. Some characters from "The Green Frontier" also appear in this book.
