Peter Ehlen

Peter Ehlen SJ (born May 16, 1934 in Berlin ) is a German philosopher and Jesuit . Ehlen is professor emeritus at the University of Philosophy in Munich.

Life

Peter Ehlen joined the Jesuit order in 1952 . He was ordained a priest in 1963. From 1965 to 1971 he studied philosophy, Eastern European history and Russian literature at the Free University of Berlin . In 1971 he received his doctorate there with the thesis The Philosophical Ethics in the Soviet Union: Analysis and Discussion . Ehlen taught from 1971 until his retirement in 2002 at the University of Philosophy in Munich, since 1975 as a full professor for the history of philosophy . From 1988 to 1994 he was rector of the university. From 1979 to 1986 he was director of the Catholic East Academy in Königstein.

Research priorities

Ehlen does research in particular on the Russian philosophy of religion and is co-editor of Simon L. Frank's works in German.

Ehlen has dealt intensively with the teachings and philosophy of Karl Marx and in this context also with ethical positions in the former Soviet Union. Through his publications, he led generations of students to a critical examination of the philosophy of Marxism at the University of Philosophy . Ehlen is in scientific exchange with Russian philosophers in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
