Peter Giles (singer)
Peter Giles (born February 15, 1939 ) is a British singer ( countertenor ), vocal teacher and musicologist.
Life
He began his career as a choirboy in one of the all-male cathedral choirs in London, and later studied singing with the countertenor John Whitworth. His first engagements as a professional musician were at Ely Cathedral and Lichfield Cathedral , then Canterbury Cathedral from 1978 to 1994. He made numerous concert appearances as a soloist in the UK and abroad. He also appears on television with solo programs and readings.
He took additional lessons from Arthur Hewlett and specialized in the sinus tone technique from Ernest George White, which in the vocal training of voices, especially countertenors, places particular emphasis on the use of resonances in the headspace. In this method he teaches language and singing today. He performed with the male trio Canterbury Clerkes over a period of 25 years. In June 2000 he founded the mixed vocal quintet Quodlibet, which he directs and of which there are three recordings. He has also been an organist and choir director at various churches and trains and conducts choirs.
He wrote several basic musicological works on the subject of countertenor.
