Peter Robert Keil (born August 6, 1942 in Züllichau , Brandenburg ) is a German painter and sculptor .

Life

The son of a blacksmith lost his father in early childhood during the Second World War. His artistically gifted mother managed to get through to West Berlin with her son at the end of the war, where the two settled after the war. There, Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting - especially in Expressionist artists and in the works of Pablo Picasso . The painter Otto Nagel , who originally came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him his first manual skills and painting techniques. In 1956, Keil began an apprenticeship as an art fitter , which between 1959 and 1961 studied at the Berlin University of the Arts . With the construction of the Berlin Wall , contact with Keil's mentor Nagel largely broke off and from the early 1960s onwards, Keil increasingly relocated abroad.

With the beginning of his studies at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, Keil came into contact with numerous other artists who were to shape his generation. B. Georg Baselitz , Eugen Schönebeck , Markus Lüpertz and Joachim Schmettau . During his time on Mallorca, he also met Joan Miró several times in his studio. From the early 1960s, Keil moved into studios in Paris, London, Berlin and the USA. Today he lives and works for the most part in Zimmerau (Bavaria), Berlin and Los Angeles.

Working method and work

In the early stages of his artistic career, Peter Keil orientated himself stylistically on German Expressionism . In terms of topics, he was initially interested in the works of the early Berlin years primarily in typical urban milieus and marginal figures in society. At the same time as his stay in Paris and the associated immersion into the nightlife there at the beginning of the 1960s, however, a great change in his style can be observed. Keil increasingly developed away from a realistic conception and towards a new, much more spontaneous and dynamic painting style, which he further developed during his London years and finally as part of the Berlin Neue Wilden at the beginning of the 80s. The use of intense to bright colors, as well as the renunciation of realistic representationalism, have been the typical characteristics of his painting style since then. The color of his pictures is applied with quick and quick brushstrokes as well as occasionally in a pastose manner and the motifs of his pictures are repeatedly alienated by graffiti elements. Thematically, Keil prefers human figures, portraits, big city scenes, landscapes and flower still lifes. Keil's emotional painting is primarily driven by a desire for liberation from social constraints and conventions.

In the past 50 years, in addition to numerous large and small format paintings in oil and mixed media on canvas, a number of sculptures in wood and steel as well as a significant number of majolica have been created .
