James Morton Schopf (born June 2, 1911 in Cheyenne , Wyoming , † September 15, 1978 ) was an American paleontologist and geologist . He dealt in particular with paleobotany and the geology and paleontology of coal .

Schopf studied botany at the University of Illinois , where he earned his master's degree in 1932 and received his doctorate in 1937. From 1934 he was in the coal department of the Illinois State Geological Survey under Gilbert H. Cady . There he dealt with all aspects of the geology and palaeontology of coal and especially the plants occurring in it including the study of spores and pollen ( palynology ), their classification and application in stratigraphy . From 1943 he was at the Bureau of Mines in Pittsburgh , where he researched the origin and classification of coal. From 1947 he was in the Department of Paleontology and Stratigraphy of the US Geological Survey in Washington, DC There he stayed at the US Geological Laboratory at Ohio State University from 1950 to 1961 (during which time he conducted research in Antarctica ) on his retirement in 1976.

He received the Merit Award and Distinguished Paleobotanical Award from the Botanical Society of America , the Antarctic Service Award, the Mary Clark Thompson Medal from the National Academy of Sciences , the Gilbert H. Cady Award from the Geological Society of America, and the Paleontological Society Medal . The Mount Schopf in Antarctica is named after him.
