Peterborough Castle , also Mount Thorold or Touthill , is an abandoned castle in Peterborough in the English county of Cambridgeshire .

history

The abbot Thorold of Peterborough , a Norman appointed by King William the Conqueror , had Peterborough Castle built soon after the conquest of England in 1066. A moth was erected near the cathedral, in what is now Dean's Garden . Abbot Thorold had the castle built to protect himself against the monks in the cathedral in the turbulent times after the Norman conquest. The abbot at the time, Martin de Bec , had the castle demolished in the 12th century .

Today only the mound of the castle is preserved, which is still 10-12 meters high. The site is a Scheduled Monument .
