Redevelopment

After more than 135 years of operation, it no longer met the current technical requirements. Therefore, from 2017 to 2019, the tunnel was widened and lined with a new reinforced concrete shell. In contrast to the raw rock before the renovation, the concrete is impermeable to water and prevents wet spots in the tunnel. Thanks to the wider tunnel profile, the distance between the two tracks could also be increased from 3.50 m to 4.00 m after the renovation. In order to be able to increase the distance between the tracks outside the south portal, the uphill supporting wall there was also relocated as part of the measure.

The renovation was carried out using the "tunnel-in-tunnel method". A single construction track is laid in the originally double-track tunnel and surrounded by a steel protective housing, the inner "tunnel". This means that traffic on the route can be maintained during construction work, albeit with small restrictions such as necessary adjustments to travel times. The construction costs are stated by the executing company at € 16 million
