Petra is a female given name . As the female form of Peter , Petra is derived from the Greek "petros" (German "stone, rock").

The name has been used in Germany since the 20th century and was particularly widespread between 1950 and 1980. In 1960 Petra led the list of the most frequently given female first names in the GDR . In the Federal Republic of Germany the name was in 1967 number 3 on the corresponding list.

The June 29th is the name day of Peter and therefore also of Petra. May 31st is mentioned less often as the day of the namesake Petronilla .
