Petra tou Limniti ( Turkish Yeşilırmak Kayası ) is an approximately round, high island northwest of Vouni , in the northwest of Cyprus , which is about 80 m from the shore. It is 150 m long and 105 m wide with steep north and west sides. The island is one of the places that existed as early as the pre-ceramic Neolithic Cyprus, around 8600 BC. Began to be inhabited.

Cyprus expedition

When the Swedish Cyprus expedition under Einar Gjerstad excavated the palace of Vouni from 1927 to 1931 , the members made a visit to the rocky island. The remains of some of the huts they discovered were the first evidence of the Neolithic Cyprus. A short excavation took place in 1929. The island is only accessible from the east. Here lies a small plateau with a rough surface where the remains of two multi-phase primitive huts were found. The other finds consisted of flint , bone and stone objects, mainly idols , bowls and tools. The finds were dated to 8200-5900 / 5600 BC. Dated.

Petra tou Limniti must have been an island, although the sea level was initially significantly lower than it is today. No Neolithic relics have been found on the neighboring headland. The place may have served fishermen from time to time as a base camp, as the settlement layers are stacked like tales , but it can also be used as a cult area .

Shillourokambos and Tenta are now the oldest settlements in Cyprus. However, Petra tou Limniti is still considered to be one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The island is an important nesting site for the Mediterranean seagull ( Larus michahellis ).
