Petrus Artomius

Petrus Artomius (born July 26, 1552 in Grodzisk Wielkopolski as Piotr Krzesichleb ; † August 2, 1609 in Thorn ) was a Polish Lutheran preacher, collector, editor and translator of sacred chants.

life and career

In 1573 Artomius became tutor to two young aristocrats and studied theology in Wittenberg in 1577 . In 1578 he was back in his Polish homeland as a Lutheran preacher in Warsaw , Węgrów and Kryłów . From 1586 he lived as a Polish preacher at the St. Mary and St. George Church in Thorn (Toruń). On August 2, 1609 he died in Thorn and was buried here.

Artomius is particularly important as a collector, editor and translator of sacred chants. In 1587 his first hymn book, the so-called Thorner Kantional, appeared . It saw numerous new editions by 1728.
