Whalsay

The excavated round cairns from Pettigarths Field are about 6.0 and 4.5 m in diameter and are nesting at Benie Hoose on the Shetland island of Whalsay in Scotland .

A few smaller facade panels and masonry can be seen in the southern half of the large stone hill. The north side is less secure, here the cairn is connected to the second cairn.

The southern, larger hill is about 6.0 m in diameter, with a corridor to the east and an apsidic chamber (unlike in the Islesburgh Cairn ) about 2.0 m in diameter. The chamber and corridor were paved. There are some large stones next to the chamber, probably from the roof or walls of the chamber.

To the north lies a round cairn about 4.5 m in diameter with a rectangular stone box about 1.2 m long .

The first archaeological investigations were carried out in 1936 and 1938. In 1963, Ch. ST Calder (1891–1972) dug again. Pottery shards were found during the excavation, but they were too small to be identifiable.

Nearby is Gamla Vord and the menhirs of Yoxie .
