from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pfaffplatz is a place in Kaiserslautern in district downtown West.

location

It is located at the intersection between Pariser Strasse , Rudolf-Breitscheid-Strasse and Helmut-Hartert-Strasse. Today one of the most important bus stops in the city is located here.

history

In older city maps, the area around today's Pfaffplatz is still referred to as a damp meadow area. In 1887, the open space was drawn in by Eugen Bindewald in the urban planning expansion plan . A free space was planned there since 1880 because the meadow area was not suitable for building. A timber yard and a sawmill have been located on the edge of the square since around 1860. The so-called Holzstraße still leads from Kotten to Pfaffplatz today . From the end of the 19th century, a small weekly market took place on what was then called Wittelsbacherplatz. It had been called Wittelsbacherplatz since 1892.

In 1893 the square was to be renamed Pariser Platz. On August 21, 1939, however, the city council decided to rename Wittelsbacherplatz to Georg-Michael-Pfaff-Platz. The name should remind of Georg Michael Pfaff , the founder of the Pfaffwerk . In practice, the name Georg-Michael-Pfaff-Platz was used. The current name Pfaffplatz was never officially decided; it first appeared on an electoral roll in the mid-1970s.

In order to upgrade the square with a striking structure, construction of the Pfaffbad began in 1912. However, this was torn down on June 16, 1975, which suddenly changed the appearance of the square. The original aim of the demolition was to create a “green space with a small water area” on the site. This decision was the result of a contested discussion since 1950; a large public discussion took place, particularly in the summer of 1954.

In the 1950s it was planned to build a bus station on the Pfaffplatz site. At the same time, thought was given to tunneling under Pariser Strasse and a waiting hall with a kiosk. However, nothing came of these plans. Since the city was not in possession of all the land at that time, it had to approve the construction of the commercial building, including a café, sales room and kiosk. The Aladin cinema and a branch of the Stadtsparkasse Kaiserslautern as well as a residential complex were also built during this time .

Since the 1990s, plans for a redesign of Pfaffplatz have been idle.
