A pan strainer is a kitchen utensil that is used as a splash guard when cooking with frying pans . It is commercially available in various shapes and materials. It usually consists of a round, flat and close-meshed sieve made of stainless steel and is equipped with a handle, some of which is made of plastic in addition to metal . Pans with a sieve diameter of about 29 cm , with which pans up to about 28 cm in diameter can be covered, are commercially available  . However, they are also available with other or even larger screen diameters.

The strainer is placed on the pan, covering it completely. The close-meshed sieve prevents hot frying fat from splashing out of the pan, but at the same time allows the steam to escape unhindered from the pan.
