history
In 1828, the child Theresia Payer planted a birch tree and attached a picture of the Mother of Grace to it, which she had taken home from a pilgrimage. Later she married Anton Kobald, the owner of an inn. In 1852 the man fell ill with pneumonia. In the event of his recovery, he vowed to build a chapel instead of a simple wayside shrine. After his recovery the chapel was built, and on September 29, 1853, the feast of St. Archangel Michael , consecrated as the Klein-Mariazell chapel. Due to the increasing number of pilgrims, the childless couple decided to build a church, which was built from 1883 to 1890 in the neo-baroque style. The consecration of the church with Prince-Bishop Johann Baptist Zwerger took place on June 14, 1890. On January 1, 1926, the church was elevated to a parish church.
