The Roman Catholic parish church Erlauf stands on the market square in the market town of Erlauf in the Melk district in Lower Austria . The church consecrated to St. Johannes Nepomuk belongs to the deanery of Ybbs in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church and the war memorial are under monument protection .

history

A chapel was named for the 15th century. A new church was built from 1742 to 1745 on behalf of Josefa von Zinzendorf. The church was elevated to a parish church in 1783. The tower was built in 1853.

architecture

The box-shaped, undivided nave under a hipped roof has segmented arched and lunette windows from the 1950s and shows a monumental wall painting by the painter Sepp Mayrhuber from 1953 depicting St. Christopher . The set south tower has a high bell storey with pilasters and a clock gable and has a bell dome with a lantern. Above the portal is a crucifix as a plaster scratch representation. The drawn-in north choir has a polygonal end. A two-storey sacristy is attached to the west.

The war memorial on the nave bears a high relief of a dying soldier with an angel by Josef Schagerl on a pedestal in baroque forms (no year). In front of the church is a fragment of the pediment with an eagle relief from the second century.

The interior of the nave appears as a sober rectangular hall with a wide mirror vault over a profiled cornice. In the mirror is a curved stucco cartouche with plaster strips running radially onto the cornice. The three-axis arched south pore stands on pillars. The triumphal arch is smooth and unprofiled. The slightly drawn-in choir with a square yoke has a triangular closure and shows a stucco cartouche with ribbons. The stained glass shows a Pietà and the four evangelists (1952/1953).

Furnishing

Johann Franz Walter (1750) created the high altar as a simple column retable with a cartridge attachment and sacrificial passage portals. He shows a canvas picture of St. Johannes Nepomuk in heaven after the school of Josef von Führich around the middle of the 19th century and carries polished white statues of the Saints Joseph and Francis.

The organ was built by Max Jakob (1894) in a historical case. The organ was extended in 1965 by a parapet positive.
