Schrems parish church
The Roman Catholic parish church Schrems stands west of the main square on its own church square in the city of Schrems in the municipality of Schrems in Lower Austria . The parish church of the Assumption of Mary belongs to the deanery Gmünd in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church is a listed building .
history
In a document named around 1390 as a parish, the church had the original patronage of St. Laurentius. The originally Romanesque and late Gothic altered east tower church was rebuilt after a fire (1871) from 1873 to 1875 as a neo-baroque hall church with a west tower and consecrated in 1876 on the Assumption of Mary. 1909 and 1973 were renovations.
architecture
The parish church, located to the west of the main square on a step above the Braunaubach and surrounded by a cemetery until 1811, is enclosed in a semicircle by the church square.
The facade tower in the west has arched sound windows and a tent roof. The five-bay nave with pilaster strips and arched windows is followed by a retracted single-bay choir with a triangular closure between symmetrical sacristy and oratory extensions.
The nave under a square vault over double straps on wall pillars has a three-axis organ gallery over arcades. The ceiling paintings in the nave with a mariological cycle were created by the painter Franz Mayerhofer (1903/1905). The wall painting in the choir with evangelists and the Lamb of God was created by the painter Maria Sturm (1951).
Furnishing
The high altar around 1720/1730 with a marbled uniaxial column structure shows the altar sheet on the high altar by the painter Carlo Carlone and the top picture Trinity and bears the figures of Sebastian and Rochus. The neo-baroque pulpit is from the 4th quarter of the 19th century. There is a carved figure of Christ on the hostage column from the 18th century.
The organ was built by Matthäus Mauracher (1894).
