The parish church of St. Leodegar is the Roman Catholic parish church and one of the two churches that characterize the townscape of Birmenstorf . The church patron is Leodegar von Autun .

prehistory

There was probably a church in Birmenstorf as early as the 12th century . There is documentary evidence that Bernhard von Clairvaux and his entourage stayed overnight on the night of December 16-17, 1146. As was customary at the time, the traveler and his entourage probably spent the night in the village church. After various expansions, this church became too small for the local Catholic parish at the beginning of the 20th century. That is why the first plans for a new church were drawn up in 1914. The current Catholic village church was finally built between February 1934 and April 1935 next to the existing parity church.

Building

The church, built according to a design by the architect Anton Higi , is oriented from west to east . The main nave consists of a rectangle with a gable roof, an attached sacristy on the south side and an approximately 30 meter high tower. Later, a funeral hall would be built on the east side . In contrast to the white exterior color, the interior of the church is kept rather dark with a lot of wood. As is customary in pre-conciliar churches, the choir is elevated. The altarpiece on the eastern inner wall of the choir shows Christ as King, accompanied, among others, by Mary , Joseph , the church patron Leodegar. The windows in the nave, designed in bright colors by the Zurich painter Giuseppe Scartezzini , represent the festivities of the church year. The various sacraments are displayed in the choir window, designed by Gottlieb Engeler's church art workshop in Andwil .

Bells

For the Catholic Church, the bells cast in 1878 by the Rüetschi company in Aarau for the parity church were used. One of the four bells was cast over in 1905 because of a crack and in 1962 two more bells were added, so that today six bells hang in the church tower.
