Peppermint liqueur in Leipzig

Peppermint liqueur (also called crème de menthe if the sugar content is high ) is a liqueur with an alcohol content between 15 and 25%, sometimes up to 50%, made from water , pure alcohol , sugar and peppermint essences . It is available in colorless and green, the difference being the addition of coloring agents, but the liqueurs can differ slightly in taste depending on the manufacturer.

commitment

The liqueur smells and tastes intensely of peppermint, which makes it a dominant olfactory ingredient in bars and kitchens. It is usually served neat on crushed ice as a "frappé". Well-known cocktails with peppermint liqueur are the “ Grasshopper ” (green peppermint liqueur, white cocoa liqueur, cream) and the “Stinger”, classically made from brandy and peppermint liqueur, sometimes also made with vodka. Both belong to the digestifs .

Manufacturing

The production takes place by mixing the necessary ingredients (water, alcohol, mint extract, sugar) or by maceration (long-term soaking of the herbs in a previously neutral spirit, so that important flavors are extracted from the plants and thus ensure the characteristic taste).
