Pfennigsparkasse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pfennigsparkassen were set up by the early savings banks at the end of the 19th century in order to promote the thrift and saving activity of young people and the small-scale savings system. The first German Pfennigsparkasse was founded in Darmstadt in 1880 . The start-up was often financially supported by the savings banks. The Pfennigsparkassen were mostly managed on a voluntary basis by a teacher from the communities and settled once a year with the main fund. Individual pfennig savings funds were created from poor funds or poor support associations. The penny saving also spread to other countries.

Pfennigsparen was found in various forms, for example via savings tokens worth 5 or 10 pfennigs , which were sold through sales outlets, stuck on savings cards and the nominal amount of which was then credited to a savings account when presented to the Sparkasse. The minimum deposit of the Darmstadt Pfennigsparkasse was 5 Pfennig. A full savings card with a balance of two marks could be transferred to a savings account as an initial deposit.

The Pfenniganstalt, founded in 1881 and supported by the Polytechnische Gesellschaft in Frankfurt am Main , provided the Frankfurter Sparkasse with 8,407 new savers with a total investment of 84,196 marks in the first year. In the Grand Duchy of Hesse penny savings banks were established in 1882 to forty. By 1889, savings stamps worth 345,000 marks were sold in the German Reich .

Only a few pfennig savings banks survived the period of the First World War and inflation ; some of them were converted into school savings banks .
