Horse Mill (Tallinn)
The horse mill ( Estonian Hobuveski ), also horse mill, is a historic horse mill in the Estonian capital Tallinn (Reval).
location
It is located in the northern part of the old town of Reval, north of the confluence of Laboratoriumstraße (Estonian Laboratooriumi tänav ) on the east-running Breite Straße ( Lai ).
Architecture and history
The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1379 and was used to grind flour even during a siege of Reval or when water mills did not work due to lack of water . The mill was operated with 8 to 16 horses. After a fire in the mill, it was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. The building then served as a place to store the hearse of the Olaikirche, just a little further south .
Today the horse mill is also used as a venue for the municipal theater . The event room offers space for 140 people. Historical sculptures are exhibited in the building, most of which were recovered from the ruins of houses destroyed in the Soviet air raid on Reval in 1944 . On two floors there are, among other things, bas-reliefs , coverings, fittings and window pillars from the Verification Office Reval .
