A planting machine is a device for partially or fully mechanized planting of preferred seedlings of e.g. B. strawberries , garden lettuce , cabbage , tobacco or rice .

In vegetable growing , machines are widespread in which a coulter pulls a furrow in the ground, into which the young plants are planted at the required spacing by an insertion device. The furrow including the planting material is closed by subsequent pressure rollers and at the same time the plant roots are given the necessary ground contact. Commonly used as insertion devices are two rotating clamping disks made of elastic material, between which the seedlings are inserted, or rotating rigid planting disks with snap grippers for the young plants. In both systems, the seedlings are fed to the loading device by planters sitting on the machine, either directly or via a turret mechanism.

Planting machines are designed either as self-propelled machines or as attachments for a tractor . If a tractor is to be used as a tractor unit, it must have so-called crawling gears due to the low working speeds , sometimes only 100 m per hour . At the same time, the planting performance is considerably higher than when planting by hand, even with planting furrows that have been prepared by machine.

For seedlings such as B. Potatoes tubers , other methods and machines are used for planting. The machines that place the plant tubers and rhizomes in the ground are called planting machines .
