Pound grote

Pound Grote (ndl. Pond groot ) is a unit of account derived from the Flemish Groot for the pound , whereby 1 pound is calculated to 240 grote.

The Groot, minted for the first time in Flanders shortly after 1302 - the most important silver coin of the late Middle Ages - became the basis of Flemish calculating money between 1317 and 1319 . In doing so, he replaced the Parisian pfennig ( Denier Parisis ), which had previously served as the basic coin. After the pound grote had competed in the 15th century by a pound calculated at 40 grotes, both calculating coins fulfilled different functions in the 16th and 17th centuries: wholesalers calculated in pounds at 240 grotes, in pounds at 40 grotes the retail trade .
