Phalombe is a city in Malawi north of the Mulanje massif at the southwestern foot of the same name, 2289 meter high mountain and a district with an area of 1394 km² and a population of 231,990. In 2018 the city had 6,242 inhabitants. The Lukulezi Mission with a hospital is located just south of the city. On the mountain is with one of Mexico originating pine species intensively silviculture. The district extends almost to the southern shore of Lake Chilwa and is considered one of the poorer in Malawi.
Phalombe is located in an unfavorable valley location, the so-called Lister aisle. Since the two mountain ranges are rain catchers, there are repeated violent flash floods from the rocky heights in the rainy season, which can carry very heavy debris with them. The last time such an accident occurred in 1991, in which hundreds of people lost their lives and left a two to three meter high layer of mud and rubble in the village.
