Pharan

Pharan (now Firan  /فيران / Fīrān ) is a village in southern Sinai ( Egypt ), about 40 km from the coast and about 50 km from at-Tur , the ancient Raithou .

According to ancient tradition, the battle between the Israeli people and the Amalekites blocking the passage took place at Pharan, who was identified with the biblical Rephidim , as mentioned in Exodos 17: 10-15 . According to coin finds, the settlement can be traced back to the 1st century BC. Trace back to BC. It ran parallel to the Nabatean immigration into Palestine, which means that the Pharanites can be viewed as a brother tribe of the Nabateans. Around the middle of the 4th century the population of the city was Christianized, at the end of the same century the city was declared a bishopric. The titular bishopric Pharan of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to the diocese . In the course of the Arab conquest, the inhabitants gave up Pharan and probably became nomads.
