Barbara Zápolya (* 1495 ; † October 2, 1515 in Krakow ) was Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania from 1512 by marriage . She came from the Hungarian noble family of the Zápolya .

Life

Barbara was born as the daughter of the Hungarian voivod Stephan Zápolya and his Silesian wife Hedwig von Teschen (1469-1521), daughter of Przemysław II. (1420-1477), Duke of Teschen .

On February 28, 1512 she married the Polish King Sigismund I in Krakow and was crowned Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania in the Wawel Cathedral .

In May 1513 Barbara gave birth to her first daughter, Hedwig , in Posen , who was married to Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg in 1535 .

Barbara lived most of the time alone in Vilnius , as her husband, as Grand Duke of Lithuania, was most of the time (1512–1522) at war with the Grand Duchy of Moscow . In 1515 she gave birth to another daughter, Anna, who died soon after the birth. Barbara died on October 2, 1515 as a result of childbirth.

Queen Barbara was buried in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow .
