Philippe Rei Ryu Coupey (born in New York City ) is a Zen monk in the Sōtō tradition of Taisen Deshimaru and Kodo Sawaki .

Life

Philippe Coupey is a Zen monk in the Sōtō tradition in Europe, a teaching that is passed on directly from master to student and whose practice is Shikantaza : simple sitting without a goal, without the pursuit of profit.

He was born in New York and grew up in various private schools in Europe. He then began studying literature at St. Lawrence University in the United States and took on a number of different jobs, including a. Urianium search in New Mexico and social worker in the New York Bronx.

In 1972 Philippe Coupey met Master Taisen Deshimaru in Paris and became one of his close students. Working on his transcriptions and teachings, he followed Master Deshimaru until his death in 1982. Since then he has continued to teach the practice of Zen within the Association Zen International (AZI).

Rei Ryu Coupey is now a teacher and spiritual reference person for over thirty dōjōs in France, Germany, England and Switzerland.

He has always been practicing and teaching zazen in the Dojo Zen de Paris, of which he is vice-president, as well as in the Zen group Seine Zen in Paris and on numerous sesshin (periods of intensive zazen practice) organized by his students of the Sangha without a place to stay . in France and Germany. These take place in rented, simple rooms in the country, as the Sangha does not have its own temple and does not consider this to be useful.

Coupey is also one of the co-founders of Zen Simple Sitting, an association of old Zen students in the Deshimaru lineage who practice deeply religious Zen and dispense with clerical hierarchies, rituals and ceremonies.
