Phoibidas
Phoibidas († around 378 BC near Thespiai ) was a Spartan troop commander. As leader of a reinforcement contingent for the fight against the renegade Chalcidian Polis Olynthos in the First Olynthian War he occupied 382 BC. The citadel of Thebes . This act against the autonomy of an ally caused great resentment among the Greeks and strengthened the opposition to the Spartan hegemony .
The scandal led to Phoibidas being impeached and sentenced to a heavy fine, but not to Phoibidas not continuing to receive important duties.
After the Thebans were able to shake off the Spartan occupation in 379, an open war developed, which led to the Thebes taking over hegemony after the battle of Leuctra .
Phoibidas was used by Agesilaos around 379 as Harmost von Thespiai, from where he troubled the area of Thebes and fell in battle while defending against a Theban incursion.
