Collections

The museum brings together two collectors and two collections: on the one hand, the Volkmar Hess collection of around 400 phonographs , gramophones and record players , from Edison's first device to devices from the 1990s with the associated extensive collection of sound carriers including 30,000 shellac records ; on the other hand, the Helmut Dietsch collection of around 4,000 radios , magnetophones , tape recorders and televisions, including US and English radios from the 1920s and the first television set built after the Second World War as a reparation payment for the Soviet Union . Technical books and instructions for use are accessible in an archive.

Since September 22nd, 2012 the museum has been able to present Chris Howland's “one-man recording studio ” from 1986, which he donated to the museum. The handover and presentation took place in the presence of Chris Howland and in connection with a record exchange and the fourth “Musica Nostalgica” with live music by boogie-woogie pianist Jörg Hegemann . The installation cost around DM 100,000 at the time. In the foundation contract, Howland expressed the wish that the studio in the museum would also be used and that interested parties would be familiarized in workshops. Another highlight is the first mixer with amplifier from the Cologne rock band BAP .

The two operators, Volkmar Hess and Helmut Dietsch, were awarded the Golden Mint of the City of Dormagen in recognition of their commitment on December 9, 2018.

Organizational matters

The museum at the beginning of Bahnhofstrasse is open on Sunday afternoons. Admission is free. Permanent and changing exhibitions are presented. The museum also shows its treasures nationwide in cooperation with other organizers. There are musical supporting events from the sound carrier collection. According to the museum, in the second year of its existence it has about 3000 visitors annually.

Support association

The museum has organizational support from the city of Dormagen. A non-profit association wants to support the two museum founders.
