Phospholipases

Separation points when cleaved by phospholipases. Phospholipase B cleaves PLA1 and PLA2 at both sites.

Phospholipases are enzymes that split phospholipids into fatty acids (R ₁ COOH or R ₂ COOH) and other lipophilic substances. There are four main groups of phospholipases, named A, B, C and D:

• Phospholipase A
  • Phospholipase A ₁ : splits an unsaturated fatty acid at its ester bond on the C1 atom
  • Phospholipase A ₂ : splits an unsaturated fatty acid at its ester bond on the C2 atom
• Phospholipase B : can cleave the fatty acid ester bond at the Sn-1 and Sn-2 position
• Phospholipase C : splits the phosphate group before the phosphorus atom
• Phospholipase D : splits according to the phosphorus atom
