In the case of poisoning with phosphorus hydrogen such as monophosphane or other phosphines , the following symptoms occur: nausea , vomiting , diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, severe chest pain, breathing difficulties and others.

The cause of the symptoms is a paralyzing effect of the phosphorous hydrogen on respiration and blood vessels as well as damage to the lungs, liver and kidneys.

Death can result from respiratory paralysis , pulmonary edema, or collapse .

First aid can be provided through fresh air, immobilization, warmth and the administration of bronchospasmolytics . If ingested, vomiting must be induced immediately. Thereafter, hospital treatment (intensive care unit) is necessary.

Poisoning can also result from repeated ingestion of small amounts of hydrogen phosphide, which have a cumulative effect.

Phosphorus poisoning can be mistaken for food poisoning because of similar symptoms .
