Phraates (Elymais)

Tetradrachm of Phraates

Phraates was a king of the Elymais . So far he is only known from his coins. A first series bears Greek legends and shows him on the front in a frontal view in Parthian costume. The Artemis nanaya appears on the back . A second series bears Aramaic inscriptions , as well as the portrait of the ruler in profile on the obverse, again in Parthian costume, and describes him as the son of King Orodes. On the back there is again the portrait of Artemis-Nanaya. Here are Greek legends.

The exact dating of Phraates is uncertain, but based on the coins, it is suggested that it began until the middle of the second century.
