Phreatomagmatism

Phreatomagmatism ( ancient Greek φρέαρ phréar , German 'fountain' ( genitive φρέατος phréatos )) refers in volcanology to:

  • general water vapor explosions, in which superheated water turns into steam as a result of a sudden pressure release, see phreatic explosion
  • Phreatomagmatic explosion , a steam explosion that results from the contact of hot volcanic material, surface water in the strict sense
