Harald Gimpel

Harald Gimpel (born September 6, 1951 in Wallendorf ) is a former German canoeist who competed in the canoe slalom for the German Democratic Republic .

Gimpel had learned to canoe on the Saale and in 1967 was youth champion in single kayak . He was with the team of ASK Vorwärts Leipzig from 1971 to 1974 GDR champion in the canoe slalom team classification. In 1971, 1972, 1974, 1976 and 1977 he took third place in the individual ranking, in 1975 and 1978 he came second.

At the 1972 Olympic Games , Olympic canoe slalom competitions were held for the first time. On the Augsburger Eiskanal won Siegbert Horn from East Germany before the Austrian Norbert Sattler . Harald Gimpel won the bronze medal ahead of Ulrich Peters , the best-placed canoeist in the Federal Republic of Germany . After he did not qualify for the GDR team in 1973, Gimpel was back in 1975 at the World Championships in Skopje. In the individual ranking he won bronze behind Siegbert Horn and Ulrich Peters. In the team standings, Horn and Gimpel together with Christian Döring won bronze behind the West German and Polish teams.
