Cleistocactus tarijensis is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tarijensis refers to the site in the Tarija departmentin Bolivia .

description

Cleistocactus tarijensis grows shrubby with several, upright, cylindrical, fresh green, tapered shoots and reaches heights of 60 to 70 centimeters with diameters of 4 to 5 centimeters. There are about 20 low, blunt ribs . The conspicuous, round, whitish areoles on it are close together. The approximately 20 thin, needle-like thorns are whitish to straw yellow and up to 2.5 centimeters long. They cannot be differentiated into central and radial spines.

The tubular, protruding flowers often appear in large numbers near the shoot tips and are up to four centimeters long. Your pericarpell points askew upright. The orange-red flower tube is bent horizontally over the pericarpell. It is occupied by a few scales with sparse, short hair. The outer bracts are red, the inner magenta with whitish tips and hardly spread out. The spherical, light red fruits are covered with greenish scales and reach a diameter of up to 1.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Cleistocactus tarijensis is distributed in the Bolivian department of Tarija in the province of Cercado at altitudes of 1800 to 2100 meters. The first description was in 1956 by Martín Cárdenas .
