Johannes Mühlmann (born July 28, 1573 in Wiederau ; † November 14, 1613 in Leipzig ) was buried in the Paulinerkirche there on November 17, 1613 was a German Protestant hymn poet .

Life

Johann Mühlmann (1573–1613), copper engraving, draftsman: JD Hoffmann, funeral sermon by Vincentium Schmuck, Leipzig 1613

Johann I (also Johannes) Mühlmann (also Mülman, Mülmann, Mulmanis) was born on July 28, 1573 in Wiederau. He acted as a pastor in Naumburg and Laucha an der Unstrut . From 1605 he worked as archdeacon at the St. Nikolai Church in Leipzig . He attended the Princely School at Schulpforte and from there went to Leipzig in 1594 as an electoral scholarship holder to study theology and then to Jena. In 1598 he was ordained in Zeitz , after which he came to Leipzig as a Saturday preacher at the St. Thomas Church. In 1599 he became a deacon in Naumburg at the Wenceslas Church . At the University of Jena on November 12th, 1602, under the chairmanship of the theology professor and superintendent Georg Mylius , Mühlmann presented 173 theses on the method of theological evidence directed against Sophismata , "with which Jesuits attempted the Christian discussion during the religious discussion in Regensburg in 1601 Mocking and ruining the truth ". In 1604 Mühlmann became pastor at Laucha and in the same year archdeacon at St. Nicolai in Leipzig. From 1607 Mühlmann received his licentiate and temporarily the fourth professorship at the Leipzig theological faculty. In the chair and in the pulpit he demonstrated, as a contemporary of him testified, "a real lioness against the enemies of the Church, papists and Calvinists". Even without the doctoral degree he had hoped for (but according to another source with the doctorate since October 1, 1612) he rose to the position of pastor at St. Nikolai in 1613. On November 14th of the same year Johannes Mühlmann died at the age of forty and was buried on November 17th in St. Pauli. Johannes Mühlmann left behind a considerable number of theological texts, including the sermons he gave for the 200th anniversary of the university. However, he gained popularity beyond his death through his spiritual poetry. Some of them found their way into the Protestant hymn books (e.g. the Nuremberg hymn book from 1618). It is thanks to the musical arrangements by Johann Hermann Schein , Johann Crüger and Johann Sebastian Bach that his texts are still sung today. They were even translated into English and are therefore still in use today in the Anglican Church. In addition to a large series of Latin treatises which Rotermund cites in detail, Mühlmann had some books of edification that were very widespread in their time printed, among them the "Exercitum crucis", d. H. forty spiritual devotions and thoughts on the 91st Psalm (1619, 2nd ed. 1626), are particularly well known; but he has made a name for himself as a poet of sacred songs. Five of his songs, which Mützell and Wackernagel had printed, are known; all five of them can be found in the Nuremberg hymn book of 1618; some were printed in older collections as early as 1612 and 1616; the first prints do not seem to have been rediscovered yet. They then soon found a wider distribution, especially his morning song "Thanks be to God in the heights at this morning hour" and his evening song "At this evening hour let us with a clear voice". He died of typhus on November 14, 1613, only 40 years old, and was buried in the Pauline Church on November 17. In May 1968, the Stasi removed his bones in a children's coffin, after which the church was blown up.

Epitaph, Inscriptiones Lipsiensis, Stepner, 1675

It is not clear whether Stepner could really read the inscription well. The epitaph was hanging on the north wall, where the light was particularly bad. In his preface he complains about the miserable lighting conditions in the church. Stepner, who wrote down the exact Latin word form, therefore also used various older handwritten indexes of inscriptions. It may be that he thought he had to correct the word he read in Latin. In Gurlitt's list of monuments from 1895, there is absolutely atypical no reproduction of the inscription, he could not even associate the epitaph with a name. This indicates an extremely unfavorable hanging, which perhaps still corresponded to that of 1714 in the corner of the stairs to the prayer chairs near the north choir. There were certainly several refreshments and restorations, as can be assumed in 1816 and confirmed in 1899. The last one from Ms. Luckenbach 2007/08 did not reveal any evidence of a change in the letters in the relevant area due to previous restorations. Mühlmann's restored epitaph with oil painting is located in the new building of the " Paulinum ", which opened on December 1, 2017. The restoration was financed by the Service Club Soroptimist International . The portrait in a contemporary panel frame is painted with oil on wood and shows Johannes Mühlmann as a clergyman in his official costume, in a black gown and millstone ruff. He is standing in front of a gathered curtain, under his left arm he is carrying a book (Bible or postil), in his right hand he is holding a goblet. The attributes refer to the worship service and the unity of sermon and communion practiced therein. The portrait is dated on the back of the book that Mühlmann is holding in his hand with a manipulated monogram “MLM 1620”. An artist with this signature has not yet been identified. The portrait painting has been preserved together with its original panel frame, adorned with fittings and diamond applications, which is crowned by a divided cornice. Volute-decorated "ears" were added to the side, and below the frame the inscription with the names, offices and life dates of the deceased and an ornamental pendulum were added, which suggest that Mühlmann's portrait was subsequently converted into an epitaph. The - later revised - version has the following colors: black for the back surfaces of the frame and the inscription plaque, gold for profiles, applied ornaments and letters, reddish brown for the remaining surfaces and colored lustres for the imitation gemstones. Until May 1968 the epitaph hung in the north choir of the Paulinerkirche on the east wall. Already Stepner mentioned it in 1690 in his list of inscriptions “in septentrionali”, d. H. in the north aisle.

restoration

The epitaph was completely preserved, but like many others it had suffered from unfavorable storage conditions and a former anobia infestation. In particular, the framework of the decorative frame showed clear traces of water damage, which suggests that the object had been turned "upside down" for a while and had gotten too much moisture. The slightly curved wooden panel was relatively stable overall, but very cloudy and with island-like accumulations of dirt, which indicated mold infestation. In addition, there was a heavily yellowed varnish, interrupted by numerous imperfections, which occurred particularly in the light flesh areas. The red lacquer of the curtain has irreversibly discolored over time due to the effects of light and is only preserved in its original strong colors in the area of the protected frame fold.

The fastening of the picture in the frame was completely inadequate. The board was sitting loosely in the overly large fold and had suffered abrasion and loss of paint in the edge area. The cleaning of the surface and careful restoration of the portrait associated with removing the old varnish brought the high artistic quality of the painting to light again. In the sidelight, too, it reveals an arrangement of the composition that was not executed later, which provided for a broken column on a high pedestal in the background on the right. This common symbol of the man's virtues (virtus) destroyed by death underpins the thesis of the posthumous emergence of the portrait.
