Rudolf Freiherr Hiller von Gaertringen (* 1961 in Stuttgart ) is a German art historian. He has been the custodian of the art collection at Leipzig University and head of the custody since 2002 .

Life

Hiller von Gaertringen comes from a noble family from Württemberg. After a three-year restoration internship (1981–1984) in Hans-Dieter Ingenhoff's studio in Tübingen , he studied art history from 1985 to 1990 at the Universities of Tübingen , London and Munich . In 1987 he took part in the ICCROM course Scientific Principles of Conservation in Rome. He received his Master of Arts degree in 1989 from the Courtauld Institute of the University of London. From 1990 to 1991 he attended graduate studies at the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU . His teachers include Klaus Schwager, Jürgen Paul, Georg Satzinger, Patricia Lee Rubin, Kathleen Weil-Garris Brandt, Sir John Pope-Hennessy , Hans Belting and Paul Zanker . In April 2002 Hiller von Gaertringen became curator of the art collection and head of the custody of Leipzig University . In addition to extensive exhibition activities, the restoration and reassembly of works of art from the St. Pauli University Church, which was blown up in 1968, formed a special focus of work. In 2007 he completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig and acquired the venia legendi in art history. In 2012 he was appointed adjunct professor here. In 2018 he was awarded the University Medal, the highest distinction of the University of Leipzig.
