The Phung Nguyen culture is known for around 50 settlements, which are on average one to three hectares in size. Phung-Nguyen is the best excavated site. It was about three hectares. The settlements are mostly on a hill near a river. Rice was the basis of the food . There is only indirect evidence of metal in the form of metalworking waste. Spindles are used for weaving, bone harpoons are used for hunting. Most of the tools are made of stone. Numerous rings made of nephrite were found . Their function is controversial. There were clay beads.
The ceramic is richly decorated with incisions. There are mostly intertwined and merging abstract patterns. The Phung Nguyen culture was divided into different phases based on the ceramic decoration.
