Phylactery or Phylacterium ( ancient Greek φυλακτήριον phylactery , German , custody, or retardant ' , of φυλάσσω phylássō , German , guard, preserve' derived) denotes

  • a container worn on the body (e.g. around the neck) for magical protective devices and relics
  • the tefillin worn by Jews during prayer
  • In the pen & paper role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, a magical vessel (sometimes also called a phylacter ) in which a lich (undead) stores his soul in order to become immortal
