Physica (journal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Physica is a Dutch physics journal founded in 1934 (with peer review ). It is published by Elsevier , until 2007 in Utrecht and then in Amsterdam .

The predecessor of the journal appeared in 1921 as Physica , Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Natuurkunde (Dutch journal for natural history), founded by Adriaan Fokker , Balthasar van der Pol and Ekko Oosterhuis . Many of the articles were published in Dutch. In 1934 the physics part was split off. At the same time, this spin-off was a continuation of the Archives néerlandaises des sciences exactes et naturelles. Série 3A, Sciences exactes of the Dutch Society of Sciences (Hollandse Maatschappij der Wetenschappen). One of the reasons for the split was that many Dutch physicists of Jewish descent could no longer publish in the Zeitschrift für Physik after the Nazis came to power in Germany . The popular science part continued to appear as Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Natuurkunde, from 1939 the official organ of the Nederlandse Natuurkundige Vereniging . Physica was published by North-Holland Verlag, which was taken over by Elsevier in 1970.

In 1975 it split into three separate magazines:

  • Physica A: originally statistical and theoretical physics , today statistical mechanics and applications ( Statistical Mechanics and its Applications )
  • Physica B ( Physics of Condensed Matter , Solid State Physics )
  • Physica C ( Superconductivity and its Applications , Superconductivity )

Series B was originally devoted to solid-state physics and low temperature physics and Series C to atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics and optics. Until 1988, Physica B and C were also published in one issue. In that year, which was marked by the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity , Issue C was split off and devoted entirely to superconductivity.

In addition, from 1980 Physica D ( Nonlinear Phenomena , nonlinear phenomena) and 1998 Physica E ( Low Dimensional Systems and Nanostructure , low dimensional systems and nanostructures).

The intervals at which the individual issues are published varies and ranges from several times a month to monthly: Physica A and D twenty-four times a year, Physica B twelve times, Physica C two to three times a month, Physica E ten times a year.
