In 1621/22 the new order of the Piarists received its approval from the Pope. In 1625, the first attempt to found a monastery in the Habsburg Monarchy in Vienna failed due to resistance from the rival Jesuits . Since 1629 the Olomouc bishop Franz von Dietrichstein tried to get Piarists to settle in Nikolsburg. They should serve the recatholicization in the area recaptured by the Protestants.

In 1631 the first eight religious came to Nikolsburg from Rome. They received the site of the municipal hospital of St. John the Baptist and received land from the expelled Anabaptists from the bishop . The Piarists founded the "Collegium Nicolburgense" high school and began building a new church, which was completed in 1640.

The school was very popular and over time it acquired an extensive library. Since 1803 there has been a two-year philosophical education ( academy ) in addition to the elementary school and the six-class grammar school . In 1873 the schools, like others in Austria-Hungary , were nationalized, and the two higher schools became an eight-class grammar school.

In 1950 the monastery was closed by the communist authorities of Czechoslovakia as part of Aktion K 1950 and the monks were arrested. The monastery buildings and the church of St. John the Baptist have been preserved.
