Picdump

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A picdump is a - often thematic - collection of images on the Internet . The term is a suitcase word from pic (abbreviation of English picture = 'picture') and dump (English for 'unload'). The term ' Picdump ' is mainly used in the German-speaking Internet, whereas in English it is more about lists or galleries .

Content

The pictures often relate to current topics such as politics or other things that move the Internet community - often they are funny, but also sometimes impressive pictures. For example, after the publication of Thor (film) there was a large number of images in which the image of the main actor and short, concise lettering were mounted.

Typical example of a “fail” picture

A special form of picdumps are those that, like the Fail Blog, collect pictures that are also called Fails - in extreme cases also Epic Fail (English for 'unbelievable failure'). Mostly they live from the feeling of foreign shame , people are often shown in embarrassing situations.

origin

The origins of the PicDumps (colloquially also known as dumps ) can be found in the Internet forums in the mid-1990s. Despite the fact that most Internet forums offer topic-related content, there were often so-called off-topic sections. Here the users were able to discuss all kinds of topics that did not belong to the actual range of topics of the discussion forum. In many forums there were also conversations in which users took turns posting funny pictures until they became huge collections. Whole boards were later created that existed for this purpose only. These include, for example, the English-language website 4chan or Krautchan , which belong to the group of so-called imageboards .
