Pico-8 is a virtual machine developed by Lexaloffle Games. This emulates a fictitious "Fantasy Console" that never existed. The programming is done in the programming language Lua . With the help of an integrated development environment, in addition to the program code, sprites , maps , noises and background music can also be created. Games can either be exported as HTML5 web games or published on the Lexaloffle website.

The interface of programs and games is limited to a resolution of 128 × 128 pixels, the palette has 16 predefined colors.

Representation of the letters U, V, W, X, Y, Z in the Pico-8 character set

Similar to the early home computers Sinclair ZX80 , ZX 81 or Tandy TRS-80 , the character set of the Pico-8 only has capital letters. A normally entered character is displayed as a capital letter, while entering a character with the shift key results in a graphic character (so-called glyph) that can be used as a graphic element in games. A special feature is that the glyphs are twice as wide: A normal alphanumeric character is 4 by 6 pixels, whereas a glyph is 8 pixels wide and 6 pixels high. Since the 4 by 6 pixels for normal characters also contain an empty row of pixels at the top and left as a space between successive characters, the set pixels for all alphanumeric characters are therefore limited to an area of 3 by 5, which makes individual letters such as legible U, V, W difficult (see picture on the right). Since the character set is not only used in games, but also in the integrated code editor, its operation takes a bit of getting used to.

Pico-8 is already pre-installed on the PocketCHIP pocket computer.
