PIEGA SA (PIEGA Switzerland) is a Swiss manufacturer of high-end speakers and accessories. The company's headquarters are in Horgen , Zurich .

history

In 1986 Leo Greiner, Kurt Scheuch and Christian Schmid founded PIEGA SA based in Horgen on Lake Zurich. The name PIEGA is derived from the Italian 'la piega', the fold. The name refers to the ribbon technology used from the beginning, or the folding of the wafer-thin aluminum foil, which has been a central component of development since the company was founded.

The first loudspeakers with Italian names, Arlecchino , Romeo etc., were all handcrafted and initially sold personally by Kurt Scheuch. In 1991 PIEGA SA settled in Horgen at what is now the factory on Lake Zurich. The Wädenswil factory was added later.

The ribbon tweeter has been continuously developed over the past three decades. The ribbon clearly surpasses the performance of a conventional dome tweeter. The membrane consists of a 26 × 42 mm large and extremely thin aluminum foil. The moving mass is only seven milligrams and is around 30 times less than that of the lightest commercially available dome tweeters. It is driven by a highly compressed neodymium magnet as well as magnetic bars that are integrated into the front panel and function like magnetic lenses. They bundle the magnetic field lines, which means that the tweeter achieves a sound pressure level of more than 100 dB.

From 1997 PIEGA began to manufacture its loudspeakers from aluminum. The extruded aluminum ensures good stability and rigidity of the housing. Aluminum is a very stiff material and with the necessary know-how for damping, housings can be produced that do not vibrate and therefore do not develop a sound of their own. PIEGA loudspeakers are mainly made of aluminum to this day.

In 2009 PIEGA was able to combine the coaxial ribbon system in a dipole system for the first time worldwide with the Master One . The Master Line Source followed in 2013, in which the conceptual model of the so-called line source (line source / line array ) came into play. This model allows all frequencies to be emitted as a uniform cylinder sound wave - a principle for which ribbon technology was ideally suited.

Alexander Greiner, Manuel Greiner and Thomas Müller have been running the family business in the second generation since 2018.

From 2019 PIEGA will also be producing wireless speakers of the Premium series.
