Pierken Jordain (active around 1550) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance .

life and work

No dates of birth or death have been recorded for Pierken Jordain; it is not even known where he worked. Its identity emerges exclusively from a single composition left behind. He was certainly a contemporary of the Dutch publisher Jacob Baethen from Leuven . After he had established himself as a printer in Maastricht for a few years , he published a collection of Dutch songs there in 1554 with the title “Dat ierste boeck vanden nieuwe Duijtsche liedekens”. No copy of this collection has been completely preserved because the soprano part is missing in all of the pieces. This collection contains a four-part song by Pierken Jordain with the text beginning

"O troost confoort nae u staet all mijn demand" (O strengthening consolation, so much desired).

This song is a stanza of the homophonic song "Tribulatie ende verdriet / Wat moet mijn herte" and comes from the famous Antwerp chanson collection with a title that reads in full: "Een schoon liedekens in den welcken ghij vinden sult veelerhande liedekens, oude ende nijeuwe, om droefheijt ende melancolie te verdrijven ”, a book with older and newer songs,“ to chase away grief and pain ”. The only remaining copy comes from the new edition from 1544, which survived the Inquisition .
