from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Piero D'Ancona is an Italian mathematician who studies partial differential equations.

D'Ancona studied mathematics at the University of Pisa with a Laureate degree and at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, where he received his doctorate in 1987 under Sergio Spagnolo ( nonlinear hyperbolic equations ). In 1989 he became an assistant professor at the University of Rome II (Tor Vergata) and in 1992 at the University of Pisa. In 1994 he became professor at the University of L'Aquila and in 1997 at the University of Rome I (La Sapienza).

He was visiting scholar in Paris, at the Courant Institute at New York University, at Imperial College London and in Japan.

He deals with local and global existence statements for hyperbolic equations and systems, degenerate hyperbolic equations, analytical and Gevrey regularity of the solutions of partial differential equations, elliptic partial integro-differential equations of the Kirchhoff type, nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations, nonlinear wave equations and geometrical wave equations, estimates the decay of solutions, scattering of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients, regularity of the Navier-Stokes equation and harmonic analysis.

In 2006 he received the first Premio Gaetano Fichera from the Unione Matematica Italiana .
