Pierre Radisson class
The Pierre Radisson class is an icebreaker class of the Canadian Coast Guard . The class is used as an icebreaker to keep the main shipping lanes free of ice . The class is named after Pierre-Esprit Radisson , a French explorer .
Data and dimensions
Ships of the Pierre Radisson class are based on the first icebreaker built. They are around 98 meters long and 19 meters wide. The weight of these icebreakers is around 7,720 tons, with a draft of 7.2 meters. Ships of the Piere Radisson class, equipped with a diesel engine , reach a top speed of 16 knots .
history
The first ship with this name was built in 1978 by the Burrard Dry Dock shipyard in Vancouver . The “Pierre Radisson” became famous in 2015 when it rescued the Russian helicopter pilot Sergey Ananov . Ananov had tried to orbit the world in a helicopter and crashed in the process between Greenland and Canada's Baffin Island . Ananov survived the crash and was finally rescued by the "Pierre Radisson".
